I realized it’s been awhile since I posted a reno update! We moved into our house (built in 2001) in March. We were excited to move into a newer home (our old house was built in 1974) knowing that things like the furnace, pipes, etc., would be in great shape. I also had hoped that the decorating wouldn’t be too out-dated since the house was less than 10 years old. Boy was I wrong! We have completely given our house a facelift, updating the walls and flooring with more modern colors and design.
First, we helped bring our kitchen out of the late 90’s by removing the wallpaper border, changing the hardware on the cupboards, and painting the walls with Benjamin Moore Natura in Flagstone during our kitchen reno. Then, we moved on to the kid’s bedroom renovation which was something you would likely see on a design show about bad decorating! We replaced the (checkered) flooring with laminate, then painted the walls with Benjamin Moore Natura in Copley Grey. The basement rec room was next, which consisted of new carpet from Krauss Carpet, new baseboards and window trim and Benjamin Moore Natura in Woodstock Tan.
The basement bathroom was a huge HUGE task. My husband decided to completely gut the bathroom – in other words, he pulled out all the flooring, took down the walls (one of them had mold and water damage), and of course removed all the fixtures like the sink, leaking shower, etc. Let’s take a look at the before picture:
The lino wasn’t actually that bad, but the blue trim on the baseboards and walls (not to mention the trim ceiling) had to go. The blue trim on the sink? That’s blue tile. And the seashell wallpaper boarder….yikes. So, the bathroom was gutted, and I was very, very afraid!
The drywall was up in no time (note that it’s a green drywall that’s more water resistant than regular) which made me feel a lot better. He even put in a new ceiling (easier to install a new fan this way I guess…that’s the story I got, ha!) Then came time for the flooring and paint. We opted for a lino that looked like tile rather than the real thing. For fixtures, I picked a pedestal sink because the bathroom is small and this would open up room (there’s a closet right outside the bathroom door for things that would have gone in a vanity). A new shower made the room complete! Oh, and the walls! I picked a bright color in Benjamin Moore Natura paint, Misted Fern – to show off the crisp white fixtures and dark floor. Still missing the baseboards, but I’ll let that one slide with my husband for a bit.
What do you think? I love this bathroom now! It went from an embarrassing outdated room in our basement to the perfect room for the family and guests. Crisp, clean, and modern! Oh, the wall hanging is from Pier One – I loved it, and after I posted a pic on Facebook a friend went to the store and bought hers at half price on sale (grumble.)
This weekend, we put in new flooring in the front entrance and main bathroom, and my husband did the second coat in the entrance and main floor. Next comes the bathroom paint and new vanity/mirror and we should be done…until we start on the deck outside towards the fall! More pictures to come soon!
