Snuggle In With These 5 Fall Reading Picks

In 2018 I promised myself to read more. I made myself accountable by doing two things: 1) joining a book club that would encourage me to read books not of my choosing and broaden my horizons and, 2) keep a list of all the books I read so I could see the list grow. When the year started I had a goal of 12 books; one a month seemed attainable, maybe. Now I’m almost finished book 17! And so, my new goal for 2018 is 18 books and I’m absolutely going to do it, thanks in part to my friends at Simon and Schuster Canada! Take a peek at the 5 fall reading picks they recently sent:

Us Against You By Fredrik Backman – Can a broken town survive a second tragedy? The follow-up to the international bestseller Beartown, from #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling author Fredrik Backman.

The Clockmaker’s Daughter By Kate Morton – A rich, spellbinding new novel from the author of The Lake House—the story of a love affair and a mysterious murder that cast their shadow across generations, set in England from the 1860s until the present day.

This Will Only Hurt a Little By Busy Phillips – A hilarious, heartfelt, and refreshingly honest memoir by the beloved comedic actress known for her roles on Freaks and Geeks, Dawson’s Creek, and Cougar Town who has become “the breakout star of Instagram stories…Imagine I Love Lucy mixed with a modern lifestyle guru” (The New Yorker)

My Squirrel Days By Ellie Kemper – Comedian and star of The Office and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Ellie Kemper delivers a hilarious and uplifting collection of essays about one pale woman’s journey from midwestern naïf to Hollywood semi-celebrity to outrageously reasonable New Yorker.

Katerina By James Frey – From the New York Times bestselling author of A Million Little Pieces and Bright Shiny Morning comes Katerina, James Frey’s highly anticipated new novel set in 1992 Paris and contemporary Los Angeles.

Amazing, right? These books are BIG right now – they’re being talked about in the media (I watched Ellie Kemper on The View this week promoting My Squirrel Days) and on the shelves prominently in stores and online (I pointed out The Clockmaker’s Daughter to a friend at Costco this week!) Which one would you pick to read first?

From my Instagram stories

Ahead of my trip to London, I picked The Clockmaker’s Daughter because it takes place in London. The premise wasn’t one that was common to my choices – 1860’s London, historical fiction, isn’t really my thing but I read some glowing reviews on Goodreads and decided it was a good bet for my long flights and airport waits. IT. IS. AMAZING. I am so glad I was sent this book, I have just a chapter or two to go before I finish it, and I am now a Kate Morton fan! Yay! I love when things like this happen!

Naturally, if you have a book lover on your list – or someone you think needs to take more time for themselves in 2019 and you want to help encourage that – any one of these books would be an excellent choice (plus, they’re easy to wrap, always a bonus!) My favorite, of course, is The Clockmaker’s Daughter but I know all of these books have sparked interest among readers and book clubs alike so they’d all be worthy of a bow this Christmas.
