Precision Makes Perfect

Cooking is a learned skill. We watch our parents and grandparents in the kitchen as kids, we experiment as we get older and later when living on our own we live on take-out and ramen noodles while we cautiously explore and take those first few steps in making meals.

One of the first meals I made well, and often, when we were first married was roast beef and mashed potatoes. There aren’t too m any ways to mess it up, but it turns out I still had some things to learn. One day when I was cutting up potatoes to boil, my mom pointed out that cutting them in all shapes and sizes wouldn’t produce the same consistent cooking result. Duh! Cutting the potatoes the same size means they would cook at the same time – not one chunk much larger than smaller other pieces as I had been doing. Thankfully, mashed potatoes is a pretty forgiving dish but it made sense why you need to be consistent when chopping things to cook, aside from the aesthetically pleasing appeal of perfectly presented dish.

So, when I was presented with the opportunity to review and utilize the Breville Sous Chef 16 Peel and Dice in my kitchen, I knew that this would be a ridiculously awesome way to get that consistency – and Pinterest perfect quality – in my own dishes. Thinking of a recipe that requires lots of chopping and dicing, I knew that Hearty Vegetable Borscht was the perfect candidate! This recipe requires peeling potatoes and beets, then dicing them along with dicing carrots, cutting up green beans and onions and then adding some herbs and broth. While the ingredients are quite basic, it’s time consuming to prep it all. Enter in the Breville Sous Chef 16 Peel and Dice!

Here’s the Instagram video we did highlighting how the Breville Sous Chef 16 works (we were obviously impressed!)

Above are some stills from the video highlighting the process of peeling the potatoes and beets, then dicing them all within the same appliance. Using the appliance for the first time, there were pauses as we referred to the instruction manual to determine which blade was needed, and which spindle to use with it. Switching out these parts didn’t take any time at all, and the clean up was quick. Both my husband and I agreed that when using this for the same processes again, it would be quicker and easier because we’d know “Oh, this blade goes with this spindle.” The appliance comes with 8 cutting tools which provide a variety of options that give flexibility during recipe preparation such as, variable slicing, reversible shredding, Julienne and French fries cutter, dough blade, emulsifying whisk and the S-Blade.

The Breville Sous Chef 16 Peel and Dice does just that with ease – the potatoes were peeled quickly (it can peel 7 potatoes in 30 seconds!) The instructions mention using round potatoes rather than oval, for more even peeling, and mine were oval so there was some peel left on a potato, which was no big deal. The beet peeling was especially helpful because beets are so messy to peel. Because they were round, they peeled perfectly too!

The extra large dicing capacity means that the area is more than twice as large as the leading competitor which also helps
minimize preparation time. The 360-degree grid provides up to 10 cups of continuous dicing in seconds and we witnessed it’s speed first-hand with glee in the video! There’s even a Dough Blade included AND Emulsifying Whisk as well! Yup. You can prep a ton of ingredients for all your meals, we’re just getting started!
