Happily Snacking With Nairn’s

Nairn's Crackers and CookiesWhile summer keeps us busy and on the go, I find it’s the fall and winter when I start to slip and don’t eat the way I should. When the kids are at school or activities, I tend to skip lunch (or nibble on whatever my four-year-old didn’t finish) and then am ravenous by about 3pm. The pantry has a multitude of snacks, but I needed something healthy and filling that wouldn’t make me have a sugar-crash before dinner.

Given the opportunity to try Nairn’s Oat Crackers and Cookies, all made from wheat-free recipes with whole grain oats, I was hopeful I would find a daytime snack option that would make me feel great, not sluggish, and full, not frantic! Just take a look at these ideas from Nairn’s:

I like the idea of utilizing crackers as an after school snack, topped with a spread or some fruit, rather than bread. Bread is heavier and I worry about filling the kids up too much before dinner, so a snack like Narin’s Oat Crackers or Cookies works for me!

What about with apples and peanut butter, nut butter and berries, hummus and veggie sticks or with chicken, mayo and cucumbers, oh my!

I love the idea of using crackers and cookies as an after school snack, instead of bread, topped with healthy and fun spreads and dips. Unlike a bread sandwich, the snacks above will fill them up just enough and ensure they’re still ready to eat dinner in a few hours.

I typically have hummus or guacamole in the fridge so using both as a spread with Nairn’s crackers is perfect, especially since it keeps me fuller, longer.  Here’s why:

Our bodies digest oats slowly, unlike refined wheat which we digest quickly. As a result, when you eat oats you benefit by:

  • Sustaining energy … great for busy people
  • Feeling full longer… helps dieters to eat less
  • Controlling blood sugar levels … key for people with diabetes
  • Swapping a refined grain for a whole grain … important for a healthy and balanced diet

Nairn’s Oat Crackers and Oat Cookies contain no wheat, for those who are wheat intolerant.

Nairn’s is an independent Scottish company based in Edinburgh. John Nairn, a local baker, founded the company in the late 19th century. Today, Nairn’s is the leading producer of oat-based products in the UK with over 80% branded market share and the sixth largest brand of savoury biscuits.

Now, you can find Nairn’s in stores across Canada! Where? Look for Nairn’s products at Loblaws, London Drugs, Sobeys, Metro, Foodland, Longo’s, Highland Farms, Whole Foods Market, Overwaitea, and independent health food stores.
