Well, Summer IS All About Vitamin D…

stonehill bread Top of mind in the summer time is sun protection and of course, all the benefits of the glorious weather and sunshine on our physical and mental health.  People are more cheery in the summer months and it’s no doubt that sunshine and Vitamin D have something to do with that!

Vitamin D works in conjunction with calcium to help maintain strong bones and teeth. It’s also vital for normal muscle, nerve and immune system functioning. More recently, studies suggest that vitamin D may protect against colon, breast and prostate cancer.1 A growing body of research shows that vitamin D may also play a role in preventing glucose intolerance and other medical conditions.2

Now, Ontario residents (and some in Quebec and Atlantic Canada too!) can have all the goodness of Vitamin D in their bread with Stonemill bread.  In fact, the breads that have the added vitamin D now have 25% of the daily value of vitamin D per serving (2 slices), which is considered by Health Canada as “an excellent source of vitamin D.”  There is almost as much vitamin D as what’s found in one cup of milk!  And more vitamin D than what’s founding egg yolks, fortified orange juice or soy beverages.  Here I always thought orange juice was *my* best source of Vitamin D and didn’t realize that your toast at breakfast could accomplish that too!

Consistent with the Stonemill brand of crafting all natural breads, the Vitamin D in Stonemill breads is natural:

– The source of vitamin D in Stonemill bread is the yeast. During the regular production process, the yeast is exposed to a source of light that naturally transforms the sterols present in the yeast to vitamin D; a reaction similar to that which occurs when the surface of our skin is exposed to sunlight. Therefore, Stonemill breads baked with this yeast becomes a source of non-fortified vitamin D.

– The vitamin D in the yeast occurs without the use of any chemicals or synthetic additives. In fact, vitamin D would occur naturally in the yeast if it was left outside sunbathing!

So why get your Vitamin D in bread? Vitamin D is an essential nutrient often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin” because our bodies can make vitamin D when sunlight hits our skin. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin that’s found in relatively few foods, added to other foods, and available in supplement form. Since bread is a staple in most households, it’s a natural choice as a source of vitamin D.

Stonemill bread is primarily available in Ontario. They have limited distribution in Quebec and Atlantic Canada. If you have trouble finding the bread in your area, please reach out to Stonemill via their Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/StonemillBakehouse?ref=br_tf and they’ll let you know if there’s a store in your area that carries their product.
