Frugal At Home Spa Tips Using Arm & Hammer Baking Soda

For ages, beauty magazines and online articles have told us how we can have inexpensive beauty treatments at home with products we already have in the pantry.  Have you ever tried any frugal at home treatments though?  I haven’t, until now.  It’s always been a matter of time and effort – we never take the time we need to pamper ourselves and I thought it was easier just to purchase beauty products instead of make my own (thinking surely I’d find a way to screw even that up, ha!)

Recently, I received a great basket full of spa-goodies courtesy of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and Mom Central and therefore had no excuse not to try some home beauty treatments on my own.  Upon unwrapping everything in the gift basket I discovered a box and designer shaker of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda along with how-to’s to recreate your spa treatments at home; an aromatherapy candle, organic tea bags and a tea cup to create a spa experience; a nail kit, nail polish, organic body lotion and lavender oil for a manicure/pedicure; and a terrycloth hair wrap and organic wash cloth for a facial.

Here are a few at home spa treatments you can do using Arm & Hammer Baking Soda:

Facial Scrub and Body Exfoliant
For smooth, radiant skin, give yourself a gentle facial and body scrub with ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. Make a paste of 3 parts ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to 1 part water. Rub in a gentle circular motion to exfoliate skin and remove dead skin cells. Rinse clean. Gentle enough for daily use!

Hair Care
Get rid of product buildup by sprinkling a small amount (quarter-size) of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda into your palm along with your favorite shampoo. Shampoo as usual and rinse thoroughly. The ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda helps remove the residue that styling products leave behind so your hair is cleaner and more manageable.

Soothing Bath Soak
For a relaxing ending to a long day, add 1/2 cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to your bath to neutralize acids on the skin and help wash away oil and perspiration. Your skin will feel silky smooth!

Home Pedicure Foot Soak
Start your home pedicure by dissolving 3 tablespoons of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in a basin of warm water and soak feet. Gently scrub with a paste of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda.

Since I’m a little germophobe and make funny faces at all things icky, the first tip I used was this one from Arm & Hammer for cleaning our combs and brushes. I just recently took a closer look at a comb I use frequently and the amount of product build up on there creeped me out (ew!).

Clean Brushes and Combs
For lustrous hair with more shine, keep brushes and combs clean with ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. Remove natural oil build-up and hair product residue by soaking combs and brushes in a solution of 1 teaspoon of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in a small basin of warm water. Rinse and allow to dry.

This was easy to do in the bathroom sink, and I felt better knowing everything going through our hair was now squeaky clean!  I think this is a great tip to use once a month or as necessary to de-gunk your brushes and combs.

Since my 3 year old is always asking me what I’m doing when I’m applying make-up or lotion, etc., I thought it would be cute to try the Arm & Hammer Baking Soda facial scrub recipe listed above with her.  Making the paste was quick and easy and she thought it was silly to look at our facial-scrub-covered faces in the mirror.  I felt good knowing that I wasn’t putting a nasty chemical on her face just for the sake of some mommy-daughter bonding time and we both had baby soft skin afterwards too (ok hers was baby soft before hand anyway!)

While most of us keep baking soda in the kitchen, keeping a box in your bathroom cupboard is a great way to remind yourself of all the great uses for baking soda for beauty treatments as well.  In the spa basket photo above, the orange plastic container on the left hand side courtesy of Arm & Hammer is perfect for holding baking soda in my bathroom closet, but you could use a regular Tupperware or other container and pretty it up for the same purpose.

Over the next few weeks as I hibernate and wait until spring to have this baby, I’m going to enjoy using my Arm & Hammer Baking Soda beauty treatments to have safe and frugal spa treatments at home – I think the pedicure is out though unless I can convince my husband to help me!

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Arm & Hammer and received a beauty basket to thank me for taking the time to participate.
