Core Training After Pregnancy

Me, pregnant with our third baby and so ready (I had to wait another 2 weeks!)

These past few months of 2018 I’ve been taking a trip down memory lane. I’m slowly converting our hold home movies from VHS to DVD and this has given me the opportunity to look back on the early days of “bringing home baby” with each of my three kids. Watching my weary tired-but-trying-to-smile-for-the-camera face, I can take myself back to those days, the emotions, the nervousness, just like that.

A woman’s body goes through tremendous changes during pregnancy, and in the days, weeks and months after as well. There was absolutely no way I was going to step into a gym with a newborn at home, but there were certainly things my body needed me to do to help heal and build back muscle tone and function. Of course, all new moms are told about the benefits of kegels (hoooollllld annnnnnnnnd release ladies!) but that’s where the advice from our moms, sisters and friends seemed to end.

A lot of mothers suffer from physical ailments after pregnancy and labour (abdominal separation, back pains, urinary incontinence etc) that can affect their everyday life and mental well-being.

Now, Nordic Fit Mama (yes, based in Finland) is taking her training program that’s been used for the past 2 years helping moms in Finland online! Canadian moms, for the first time this spring, can benefit from her five-week online course.

Nordic Fit Mama’s five-week course focuses on helping you to get rid of abdominal separation and post baby belly, which were not there before pregnancy! It’s mainly designed for women who have given birth in the past 0-12 months (also through a c-section). However, in case you haven’t trained since giving birth, and you need to activate your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, this course is for you too (I, myself, have done the first week of the course to get a feel for it!)

Here are details on the after-pregnancy workout plan from Nordic Fit Mama:

This course will provide you information on how to get a feel of your pelvic floor muscles, deep abdominal muscles and how to energize your whole body. During this course, you’ll learn which exercises are safe to do after pregnancy as we go through these exercises in a structured and progressive way. We’ll be building a strong basis to your core which is crucial before moving into more challenging sports and training in the future. The goal of this course is to rehabilitate and strengthen your body in a safe and gentle way, and to gain support in your core after giving birth.

The Nordic Fit Mama online training concept was founded by Riina Laaksonen, a founder of Hyvinvointistudio LUPAUS and a personal trainer specialized in exercise during and after pregnancy. In Finland, Nordic Fit Mama is partly funded by Business Finland. The concept combines the latest expertise in the training of moms with innovative technology know-how.

Once you sign up for the course, you’ll gain access to the online platform with all the videos at your fingertips. Every weekday of the five-week course, you’ll get an email reminder that the next video is ready for you (but don’t worry if you miss a day or want to redo a day, as the videos are all waiting for you.) You can also mark each video as complete in your account, so that you know exactly where you left off. Each video is only 10-15 minutes of your day – Nordic Fit Mama understands that new moms are understandably pressed for time, tired, and can only give so much every day and this course is intended to help you, energize you, heal your abdominal muscles and respect your time as a new mama.

The Nordic Fit Mama five-week online course is priced at $129 CAD and the next course begins April 23rd. If you sign up before April 15th, you can take advantage of the pre-launch offer for Canadian mamas and pay only $93 CAD! Breaking that down, the course is $18.60/week. If you have a friend or family member with a newborn, this would also be a really great gift to give them to utilize as well. More details can be found at Nordic Fit Mama! P.S. There’s also a survey you can take on the site to be entered to win a free course – worth a try!
