Savoury BBQ Chicken Thighs

Savoury Asian Glazed Chicken Thighs

September, like the new year in January, brings about a sense of renewal, a fresh start, and definitely the overall theme of organizing and getting into a routine. Unlike January, the weather is still beautiful and families are out and about more. Yes, September is all about busy!

September is National Honey Month! To celebrate this Sweet September, Billy Bee honey is bringing sweet tips and recipes to your kitchen, just in time for the back-to-school season (www.billybee.ca).

billy bee honeyPreparing for back to school, I have been stocking my freezer and preparing my go-to recipe lists for busy weeknights and downtime on weekends. Recently, we started utilizing chicken thighs in recipes instead of my usual chicken breast meals. There are ample baked chicken thighs recipes out there, but I’m still grilling while we can! Here is our family’s Savoury Asian BBQ Chicken Thighs recipe – if you love BBQ but have kids who don’t like anything spicy, try this sauce next time. The nutty flavour from the sesame seed oil is a nice compliment to the deliciously sweet honey flavour in this sauce. No need to add brown sugar to this BBQ sauce when you have 100% pure and natural Billy Bee honey!

Asian BBQ Sauce

A tip for grilling with this sauce – grill the chicken thighs without any sauce first and only add the sauce in the last few minutes of cooking time. This BBQ sauce can be made a few hours ahead of time to allow the flavours to blend. In the cooler months, marinating the chicken before baking would be wonderful – but during grilling season, save the sauce for the end.

Savoury Asian BBQ Chicken Thighs

Ingredients
  • 8-16 boneless chicken thighs
  • ½ cup vinegar (rice vinegar is best for this recipe, but I've used white wine or basic vinegar as well)
  • ⅓ cup light soy sauce
  • ¼ cup toasted sesame oil
  • 5 Tbsp Billy Bee liquid honey
  • 3 Tbsp Thai Kitchen Sweet Red Chili sauce
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • Chopped green onion or chives
Instructions
  1. Whisk together the vinegar, soy sauce, sesame seed oil, honey, sauce and minced garlic in a bowl. Set aside for an hour or more if possible.
  2. Trim fat from chicken thighs and grill.
  3. In the last few minutes of grilling, baste both sides of the chicken well with the sauce.
  4. Plate and top with chopped chives or green onions (optional).
Notes
Because you're not marinating in the sauce, you will have plenty for brushing on the chicken towards the end of grilling. That's why this recipe can accommodate 8-16 or more chicken thighs.

If you like a spicier sauce, consider adding some thai chillis (a little goes a long way) or even some red pepper flakes.

Honey is a great pantry staple, useful in recipes like this or even every day use because of its truly unique flavour and natural character (I love it with peanut butter on toast!). Look for more recipes at flavour.ca and celebrate National Honey Month with something delicious!
