I typically do my school supply shopping in three shifts. 1) School supplies, 2) School clothes, and 3) School shoes and backpacks. I have no particular reason for this other than it works for me! This year is the first that my son (grade 6) has had more of an opinion on his clothes and shoes so that’s put a bit of a wrench in my plans. Unfortunately for him, this means he has to shop with me (as evidenced in a recent Instagram snap of our school supply shopping!)
This year, we found shoes that both my picky 6th grade son and happy-go-lucky 2nd grade daughter love, both thanks to Skechers.
This year, my son wanted to move away from his usual athletic shoe to something a little more casual and these Gnarly shoes from Skechers fit the billl. Available in both Royal and Charcoal, these shoes have a medium width but I found them roomier on my son’s feet than his usual athletic shoe. The suede upper and Gel Infused Memory Foam cushioned comfort insole bring style and comfort together.
These Girl’s Relaxed Fit: S Flex – Fashion Play shoes are perfect for my free-spirited seven-year-old daughter. I love the light grey color (they’re also available in black and navy) and the colorful accents making it a shoe that’s sure to match her clothing at school too. She’s thrilled to have a lace-up shoe for second grade and I’m happy that the double layer mesh fabric makes them breathable, and the Gel Infused Memory Foam cushioned comfort insole makes them super comfy.
While back to school shopping can be stressful, my strategy of breaking it down into three parts works for me. I know it won’t be long before my oldest will insist on getting his own “stuff” so I’ll enjoy having this time while it lasts. I bought an L.L. Bean backpack when she started school and haven’t had to purchase another one. I buy clothes a year ahead when they’re end of season clearance so there is no back to school shopping for clothes. Shoes are purchased at Walmart so are the school supplies at the same time.

When my kids were in school I always stretched the back to school shopping over a few months looking for good sales. Things like shoes and clothes were usually last of the summer purchases so I made sure what I bought would not be outgrown before school started. They seemed to always grow like weeks over the summer.

It’s good to have a shopping plan, to try to get a lot done in one attempt, but you definitely need to wing it and make sure you leave time for more than one trip, if necessary.
