Lately, we’ve been having the phone-discussion with our son. The discussion being that he asks for one and we keep telling him “no!”
He’s ten, and while I don’t think ten year olds should have cellular phones as a rule, I do see where they can be very useful and I think it’s only a matter of time before he has his own. I’d love to know when the school’s bus driver is late picking him up from school, or have him take a phone to the park this summer. Still, I’d rather not spend several hundred dollars on the same brand of phone I have, because he can’t keep track of his winter gloves, much less a phone.
Given the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 S to review, I think we’ve found our answer. With a 5″ HD 720 x 1280 pixel screen, IPS 16M color display and 8 Mpxl camera (packed full of cool features like face detection and smile detection), this phone certainly doesn’t lack in bells and whistles.
We’ve been playing with the phone over the past month or so, taking it along when we’re out and about and using it in place of my own when possible. Aside from adjusting to the Android/iPhone difference, I found it very easy to use, loved the large screen and graphics and was annoyed going back to my current phone with a smaller screen.
At $0 down with a phone term or $299 without, this phone is a less expensive option for those in need of a technology upgrade, or new smartphone users. The jury is still out on whether our ten year old will be walking around with this one in his pocket this summer. Why? I may keep it for myself instead!

If I won I would send it to my mother-in-law so we could stay in touch better. She currently doesn’t have a smartphone and I have to email her pictures of the kids about once a month to keep her up to date (she lives 20 hrs away). With a smartphone I would be able to text pictures and things to her daily! It would be a nice birthday present, we would set her up with a phone plan too!
