I’m a bit of a geography geek and even have a science degree with a major in Geography. When I received the Night n’ Day Globe from Mastermind Toys I was literally giddy. OK, OK, I know it’s a “toy” technically but it really is a fantastic product that doubles as an educational piece, a nightlight, a calendar, a clock, and a lamp.
The Night n’ Day Globe requires some assembly once opened, but the easy to follow instructions made putting the whole world together very easy. The base plate under the earth allows you to set the date and once plugged in the whole system acts as a clock, turning at the same rate as the actual earth.
I grew up with my dad using apples, oranges and a flashlight and trying to simultaneously hold the flashlight, spin the apple (earth) and rotate around the orange (sun) in an effort to explain night and day as well as the seasons. While it was quite humorous, it still left me a bit confused. That is why the Night n’ Day Globe is such a valuable ‘toy’ since you can see where people on earth are experiencing sunrise, sunset and twilight in real time by looking at the globe. It’s a great way to learn about the world’s time zones, as well as seasonal daylight patterns.
The motor from the AC adapter generates a slight buzz to the tempo of a ticking clock and the interior light of the globe can be turned off/on with a simple flick of a switch. In order to have the date/time remain consistent, however, the globe will need to be plugged in at all times.
The Night n’ Day Globe makes an excellent gift this holiday season for anyone interested in a bit of science and geography from children to teachers, or everyday regular adults like me. To my delight my nine-year-old has a keen interest in maps and globes and is constantly asking me ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about the sun/earth relationship. I am thinking this will make the perfect gift for him this Christmas so we can spend some time learning more about the earth’s movements and watch in real time as daylight shifts to nightfall both outside and on the globe. I know he will love looking up all the places on the earth that he has future plans to travel to!
