5 School Lunch Ideas

Parents are busy getting ready for back-to-school.  Aside from shopping for clothes and school supplies, parents also have to plan for months and months (and months. and months!) of school lunches!

My son (8) is quite content with a bologna sandwich 5 days a week, but he needs more variety than that!  I’ve picked 5 school lunch ideas worth sharing here.  Hey, if anything I’ve given you one week’s worth of school lunches…the rest is up to you!  😉

1. Frozen is fun!
Two of my kid’s favorite treats are better packed frozen – that way they’re still chilled by the time lunch arrives. Yogurt tubes and juice boxes are two items perfect for packing frozen.

2. A Sweet Treat
Instead of white or brown bread with jam, try cinnamon raisin bread with a spread of cream cheese and raspberry jam!  Yum!

3. Cereal for Lunch
My kids love cereal and happily eat cereal for lunch. Many schools offer milk-programs where you can buy your milk daily (ours utilizes a punch card system) so I can pack my son’s cereal in a Tupperware container and he can add the milk at lunch time. Add a side of fruit and maybe some yogurt you’ve got a filling lunch.

4. Soup in a Thermos
Whether it’s your own home cooked variety or tomato soup, you can make it fun by adding toppings in baggies or separate containers – goldfish crackers, croutons or cheese all add flavor and filling.

5. Mini Deli Tray
Pack sausage, cheese, crackers and pickles in separate containers or baggies for a deli style lunch (one of my son’s favorites!)

  • I make pizza dough in bread machine, make into little pizza size buns with sauce and cheese, once cooked i freeze and pull out in morning to put into lunches. These are all three kids favorite

  • I like the cereal idea.

Youngest has decided she doesn’t like sandwiches any more!!

Neither youngest nor eldes will touch soup. I have no idea how to make that change 🙁

One that does work for us: 1/2 bagel with cream cheese and a smear of strawberry jelly.
