In his own words and stunning colour photographs, Johnson crosses the 49th Parallel to bring a fresh and intimate perspective to the life of the storm-chaser on both sides of the border.

The reader travels with Johnson through 12 American states and two Canadian provinces (Saskatchewan and Manitoba) in his quest to not only intercept, but document, some of the season’s most powerful storms, like the F5 tornado that devastated Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011.

Blown Away is also a look inside the world of severe weather photography, and Johnson provides tantalizing detail of his equipment and shot strategies that will satisfy the amateur and professional photographer alike.

If you follow me on Twitter, you know I’ve been raving about this book for the past few weeks and today it’s finally available on store shelves across Canada and at Chapters Indigo online!  Look for it in Walmart, Chapters Indigo, Coles and Rally (airport!) stores across the country today.

I loved this book on sight – the book presents well with it’s large 12 x 17 landscape size which still doesn’t do justice to the beautiful shots taken by Greg Johnson capturing nature’s wrath, fury, and absolute beauty.

In the book, Greg details his first storm hunting season (the reader learns it’s not storm chasing as you don’t want to be behind the storm, you want to intercept it!) in 157 gorgeous pages.  He shares his emotional experience in Joplin, Missouri when the devastating tornado on hit May 22, 2011 as well as stories of storms literally next door in towns across Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Fans of storm chasing television (like my husband and son) will appreciate the CHASER CODE boxes in pages throughout the book, detailing vocab and facts about storm chasing.  On that note, my husband and son (7) have been reading this book together and discussing the photographs.  Now, every time the sky clouds over my son is hopeful we’re going to get a storm!  It occurred to me that BLOWN AWAY is a great gift idea for Father’s Day, after watching them together.
