My Fabulous Life

I’m Getting Organized in 2012

What’s your New Years Resolution?

Experts say that most new years resolutions are destined to fail – after all, we can make a resolution any day of the year so making one when you’re in a sense, forced into it may not be the best plan.

Still, I think the beginning of a new year is a great time to make some commitments (we got engaged on NYE 1999, there’s a commitment for you!) and I’ve come up with my 2012 New Years Resolution (there it’s in bold, that makes it even more important!)

This year my goal is to purge items out of my house (I’m an organized hoarder – no garbage piles here but I have enough Bath & Body Works hand soap to last me into 2013, and enough body wash to keep my family clean for the next 3!)  The next part of this goal is to organize better.  I have a spare bedroom/office that looks like neither of the two and our toy room is a disaster!

We started early, right after Christmas, on my new years mission.

The first step, taking all the winter coats and Halloween costumes out of the toy room closet, taking out the bar, and instead having  floor to ceiling shelving for all those toys that take up too much room in a toy box and end up in the middle of the room in a pile.  Hooray!

You can’t see in this pic, but to the right there’s still room for 2 small bars to hang winter coats on too!  I’m so happy about our new storage space though I’m sure it’s not going to look this clean for long.

We also emptied out a gigantic garbage bag full of broken toys, odds and ends from games and puzzles, and other items from the toy room.  I’m so inspired by our one-day task!  Now, onto the laundry room.

Yep, that’s how I’m spending my NYE!  Happy New Year everyone!  I’m getting organized in 2012.

  • you go girl! Getting organized is an excellent goal and one I hope to accomplish as well :). I chose a one word goal for 2012 and it is “peace”. To not let anxiety and all the CRAP get the best of me!

    Happy New year to you!

    • Oh I like that one too Tara! It’s easier said than done but I agree that anxiety can get the best of you – esp when you worry about things that are beyond your control. I have improved 100% with that over the past few years. I’m not perfect (yet…heh) but I’m much better about not sweating the small stuff once I realized how much energy it was taking to worry about things I can’t control. Happy New Year to you!

  • I started purging early in 2011. My problem now is moving the stuff out of the house. I have partially filled boxes waiting to be filled. I have filled boxes that I don’t want to move because I know I can find more stuff for the same place.

When I rearranged my workroom, I put supplies in boxes so I could move furniture. Stuff is still in boxes and I can’t find stuff I need. I don’t think that is a coincidence.

Let’s think of positive outcomes for all our issues. May you accomplish that which needs to be done in the new year.

  • Great job! I spend time throughout the year thinking about what I can purge. Some things are not immediate purgers — it has to be handled delicately — a seed needs to be planted and then someone else comes up with the idea of getting rid of it and I’m like yes, definitely, totally agree lets do that. 😀

  • I have a new years resolution everyday of the year! Once I get something in my head, I try to do it. I have too many all-year resolutions…. Yes, I am a complete mess! LOL

    Love the post!

  • I am useless at being organised and so my resolution has to be to do with me, after having gained 2 stone on HRT in 4 months (so awful) and busting my ankle beyond all recognition, only now just recovering, I have spent a year unable to do any exercise and am now 12 stone. So … I have an old fat free diet book – that I know works, it cuts out all fat and makes you eat loads and loads of really healthy food so you’re not hungry, in fact I can never quite eat everything it tells me to. I am going to stick to this diet and jog in the front room while watching my favourite tv programmes – 1 hour every night – when everyone else is in bed. I started last night and this morning I was a whole pound lighter. I have an idea that the fat has to go somewhere so if you’re not eating healthy folks my fat may be winding its way towards you. Wish me luck and I’ll keep you up-to-date as to how I’m coping.

  • That closet is not what mine looks like even after I’ve organized it. You have a great goal and I wish you all the best for a wonderful 2012!
