Woombie

My husband hates the idea of swaddling babies.  He’s seen it done in the hospital, he half-heartedly agrees to do it once the baby is home…but he doesn’t like it and he lets me know.  He calls swaddling blankets “baby straight-jackets” and although I chuckle at his comparison I can understand.  To adults, the idea of swaddling seems so…well…constricting.  But that’s the point.  Babies spend 9 months in the womb all snuggled in tight and once they are out in the world, sometimes their spontaneous flailing movements can scare the (baby) crap out of them.  And so, swaddling is used to give babies that safe and secure feeling.

There are many choices out there for swaddling blankets, each with their own features.  None that I’ve come across, however, are like the Woombie.  Like it’s name, the Woombie envelopes baby in a cozy surrounding but also, unlike some other swaddling blankets, gives baby just enough room to stretch and move when they want to – just like the womb (remember those freaky times when baby stretched a little too far and you had a foot or elbow literally poking out of your belly?  Yeah…like that!)  So, in essence, the Woombie allows for mobility and swaddling at the same time – the perfect combination perhaps?

Counting down to baby’s arrival, I wanted to try a Woombie for myself for the first time.

Then, when viewing the site and seeing the Deluxe Woombie choices available, I knew this was the kind I needed to get!

The Ballet Pink Ruffles was my choice and I was so excited to get it in the mail about 6 weeks before baby’s arrival.

I washed it and got it ready to pack in my hospital bag (I got it in the newborn size, 5-13 lbs) though my husband still eyed it skeptically.

On the first day we brought baby Everleigh home, my husband was the one who reached for the Woombie first to put on her for a nap.

He had seen how well she slept in the hospital while swaddled, I suppose.

So, we put 8lb Everleigh into the Woombie though we didn’t do up the button at the top because it seemed too tight –  I think because of the material of her sleeper underneath.

Still, it did a magnificent job of swaddling her easily and she slept for a few hours like that!

Both my husband and I, not knowing we should have a bigger baby than our previous two, wished we had picked one size up since she will be outgrowing this one sooner than we’d like I’m sure.

Should we decide to purchase another Woombie, we’d have a great selection to choose from either in a local store or online.

With warmer weather coming, the Summer Woombie would be an ideal choice.

Because it makes swaddling easy for beginners and third-time around parents like ourselves, and because it honest to goodness works to make a baby feel secure and cozy as intended, I think the Woombie is a must-have baby item!

It would make an excellent baby shower gift and something expecting moms should consider adding to their registry.
