Giveaways and Reviews

Webkinz Jr.

My son has become a Webkinz fan in the past 2 years or so. Only his dad and I know his password because, at 5, he’s a computer fanatic (hello kettle, meet the pot). We log him in for appropriate lengths of time and he’s happy as can be feeding his pet. Some of the activities on the site are a little complicated for him at his age but he’s been happy so far.

When we had the opportunity to check out Webkinz Jr. pets, I was excited. I didn’t tell the kids that this particular review was coming but was busted when the box arrived. It only had a Ganz (the makers of Webkinz) logo on the box but my son was onto me and begged me to open the box.Inside the box were 2 Webkinz Jr. that I had picked out for the kids – a brown monkey for my rambunctious son and a blue and purple puppy for my cuddly daughter. The Webkinz Jr., designed for children ages 3-6, are larger than the regular Webkinz as you can see from this pic of the kids with their new pets. For those unfamiliar with Webkinz (like I was until a year or so ago), Webkinz Jr. come with a little tag attached to their paw that includes a unique code, enabling your child to log on to the Webkinz Jr. site and play in a virtual world with their new pet. My kids named their pets right away (Mikey the Monkey and Foofy the Puppy, respectively) and I helped registered my son for his Webkinz Jr. membership so he could access the site. He needs me to log on, which helps ensure that I can monitor his computer time.I like that Webkinz helps children learn about responsibility, perhaps a little too much responsibility in the case of my son who cried the other day when I said “no” to his request to log on to Webkinz that night, “But Mikey’s going to miss meeeee and he’s hungryyyyyyy” he cried. I explained that Mikey would be fine, and sure enough the next day, his buddy was waited there for him.The lines at the bottom, tokens stacked up, help indicate how happy, healthy, hungry or energetic your pet is. From logging on earlier this morning when I took that screen shot, to 4 hours later, Mikey the Monkey is a little more hungry, so he’ll need to eat the next time my son plays, “Hunger is OK” was the message this afternoon. I joked with my husband that it was bittersweet watching the kids play with their Webkinz Jr. online. Due to allergies, we don’t have any family pets, so these cuties will have to do for now.1 reader is going to win a Webkinz Jr. of their choice!
